A Beginner's Guide to Himalayan Trekking
By Aditi Rawat · 14 January 2026
Trekking in the Himalaya for the first time can feel intimidating, but with the right preparation almost anyone with a reasonable level of fitness can do it.
Start your fitness prep at least 4-6 weeks before your trek. Focus on cardio (running, cycling, stair climbing) and basic strength training for your legs and core.
Invest in a good pair of trekking shoes and break them in well before the trek - blisters are the most common reason people struggle on the trail.
Layering is key for warmth. Carry a moisture-wicking base layer, an insulating fleece, and a windproof/waterproof outer shell.
Finally, choose a trek that matches your fitness level. Easy grade treks like Kedarkantha or Valley of Flowers are great starting points.
